Retention through mentoring

Mentoring service for your apprentices or trainees

Young people face a number of challenges when transitioning from a supported school environment to the workforce. No-one is an expert in helping them through all the challenges they will meet.

After you have put a lot of time and effort into training your apprentice, starting again with someone new is a significant cost to your business. Together with MEGT you can ensure your apprentice has the encouragement and support necessary to complete their apprenticeship. This means increased staff retention, ongoing productivity and less disruption to your business in the long-term.

With the right support, they can reward you with performance and skills growth for your industry.

Our aim is to support and partner you in retaining your apprentices.

MEGT provides a few options for you and your apprentice or trainee.

Mentoring options

Option 1 - the complete service

MEGT employs the apprentice or trainee and places them with you as a host employer.

The MEGT Consultant regularly connects with the apprentice or trainee – and their workplace supervisor – throughout the full period of their Australian Apprenticeship and is their advisor, mentor and provides pastoral care.

MEGT employs around 1,000 apprentices and trainees and includes mentoring in this full service option.  There are no restrictions on trade, industry or experience to receive this mentoring support because it is an integral part of the service.

This mentoring services comprises

  • pre-employment induction to ensure they are work-ready
  • regular site visits and communication to ensure they are safe in the workplace
  • regular communication (face to face on site and by phone) to support them in handling challenges that may affect their work, their training and the completion of their apprenticeship or traineeship
  • optional training sessions for Supervisors which will cover the key focus areas of being a good apprentice supervisor
on and off the job training progress
  • where required – professional counselling to assist in transitioning an apprentice into the workforce.
  • 24 hour assistance through the MEGT Employee Assistance Program: a confidential personal and professional development resource available to all employees and their immediate families.

Ring 13 6963 for more information.

Option 2 - Support for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

MEGT has been involved with the employment and training of Indigenous apprentices and trainees for more than 10 years.

MEGT’s Indigenous Apprenticeship and Traineeship Network (IATN) provides sustainable employment opportunities through the Group Training model for Indigenous people across all communities in Australia. This operational model provides culturally appropriate mentoring and support for both the employer and the Indigenous apprentice or trainee.

Since the inception of IATN, 197 trainees and apprentices have commenced with approximately 70% successfully completing their qualification.

SUB HEADING: First year trade apprentices – free service provided by MEGT Australian Apprenticeships Centre Mentors

[SUB SUB  HEADING] Who is eligible?
Free mentoring support is available to Australian Apprentices and trainees who:

  • are aged 16–19 years (inclusive) except Victoria which is for those aged 16-25 years (inclusive)
  • don’t have assistance from anywhere else
  • are undertaking a qualification on the National Skills Needs List
  • are not employed by a Group Training Organisation
  • are registered through MEGT Australian Apprenticeships Centre
you believe would benefit from contact with a Mentor.

[SUB SUB  HEADING]What support is provided?
The MEGT Mentors are skilled and trained in assisting where appropriate and connecting the apprentice to specialist help if needed. It’s personal. It’s confidential. The focus of support is to help apprentices deal with issues that may be a contributing reason to them not completing their Australian Apprenticeship.

That includes helping the employer as well, if that is appropriate.

This government supported initiative, the Australian Apprenticeships Mentoring Package, is in addition to the free services MEGT already provides to Australian Apprentices and employers through Australian Apprenticeships Support Services.

[SUB SUB  HEADING]How do you get this mentoring assistance for your apprentice?
The MEGT Apprentice Mentor will be in touch regarding eligible apprentices. The program is capped at providing mentoring assistance to 3,000 Australian Apprentices across Australia.

[SUB SUB  HEADING]When?
MEGT Australian Apprenticeships Centre has been successful in securing Federal Government funding to provide support to Australian Apprentices through the Australian Apprenticeships Mentoring Package until the 30th June 2015.

[SUB SUB  HEADING]What happens?
The Mentor will meet the apprentice and employer within three weeks of the Training Contract paperwork being completed or when the employer raises it with the MEGT Consultant.

The Mentor will undertake an assessment with the apprentice to determine the contact frequency required.

Besides regular contact with the apprentice, the Mentor may refer the apprentice to external partnering  organisations for additional support where required.

An apprentice may access additional support at any stage of the program should an issue arise whilst they are progressing through their apprenticeship.

The Mentor will provide tailored support for each apprentice including face-to-face visits, telephone contact and social media engagement (Facebook – a closed and private group).

The apprentice can opt out of the program at any time. For apprentices under 18 years their parent/guardian will be contacted to let them know that the program is available.

[SUB SUB  HEADING]Privacy
MEGT is bound by the Privacy Act of 2012, which sets out guidelines for the protection of an individual’s privacy. Privacy of the apprentice is maintained including any Facebook social networking conversations.

[SUB SUB  HEADING]No cost to you
There is no cost to the employer or the Australian Apprentice as the Mentoring project is funded by the Australian Government Department of Industry through the Australian Apprenticeships Mentoring Package.
